Grassroots of CAPS

The “Saline County Coalition to Prevent Child Abuse,” now known as CAPS, was founded in 1978 by Wanda Macy and Ruby Reese in response to multiple cases of child abuse, and a related death in the Salina community. It began as a grassroots effort with a hotline directly to Macy’s kitchen and has since evolved into a comprehensive agency offering prevention and intervention programs to support families in Salina and surrounding areas.  Her founding program, Respite Care, is still offered to this day at the CAPS office.

Did you know?: CAPS to this day uses the same phone number that used to ring in Wanda’s kitchen!

Do you feel stressed or need a break?

Our program offers free, quality child care!

Parents of children ages 6 weeks to 6 years and not enrolled in kindergarten may use one session each week. Children have an enriched experience while their parents get a needed break.

Three-to-four-hour morning or afternoon sessions are available, Monday through Friday. Our trained and friendly child care staff are ready to read, play games, and engage in fun learning activities while parents attend appointments, run errands, or simply take a break!
